The French People (1902 1st edition)

SKU: 632835642834572

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A lovely, clean copy of what is understood to be the first edition of Hassall's book on the history of the French people. The book has a hard cover with a red cloth covering. The gold lettering on the front and spine is nice and clear. There are a couple of small dents to the top right hand cover of the book but not easily visible. The map inside the cover is intact and clear as well. Inside the cover there is a sticker which would imply that this book was originally owned by Sir Evelyn Ruggles-Brise, who was a prison reformer and the chief architect of the Borstal system. As this book was published in 1902, when Ruggles-Brise was 45 years old, and during a period when he was instigating his prison reforms. Additionally, it was in 1902 when he was awarded his knighthood. Hence from the dates given, it does seem feasible that this copy may once have sat in the library of Sir Evelyn.
